Kenya's quiet global star: Idd Aziz dominates Spotify's Impact List
Drummer Idd Aziz entertains guests during the Showcase Wednesday held at the Alliance Française Gardens on March 6, 2019.
Afro-house maestro Idd Aziz has once again cemented his status as Kenya’s most influential musical export, dominating Spotify’s 2025 Global Impact List — a ranking of the 25 Kenyan songs with the most international streams in the first half of the year.
7 Tracks, top international streams
While his music receives limited airplay back home, Aziz is quietly owning the global stage. With seven tracks on the list — the highest by any Kenyan artiste — he’s proving that streaming success doesn’t need local validation to make global impact.
His chart-topping collaboration “Time (Mimi)” with Germany-based Dhali leads the list, followed by fan favourites like “Tu Ta Le”, “Mentuliza”, “Penda”, “Nihurumie”, “Manga” and “Nairobi”.
A Spotify editor described Aziz’s music as “a fusion of Afrohouse, Swahili rhythms, and spiritual undertones,” adding that his sound “isn’t just thriving on streaming platforms — it’s being danced to in Berlin nightclubs, spun in Bali beach lounges, and echoed through Lisbon’s late-night radio shows.”
Since Spotify’s entry into Kenya in 2021, Aziz has consistently featured in the top five most-streamed Kenyan artistes internationally.
In 2022, data revealed that his biggest fan bases are in the US, Germany, France, South Africa, and Spain.
By 2023, he had even unseated the late folk icon Ayub Ogada as Kenya’s most streamed global act.
Legendary collaborations
Aziz’s musical journey dates back to the early 2000s when he first emerged on Kenya’s alt-music radar. But it’s his years spent abroad that shaped his globally resonant sound.
Over the years, he has collaborated with African legends such as Angelique Kidjo, Salif Keita, Alpha Blondy, and Youssou N’Dour — alliances that have further sharpened his sonic identity and widened his global appeal.
Spotify’s 2025 Global Impact List doesn’t just celebrate Aziz — it highlights the collective ascent of Kenyan music.
Artistes like Savara, Karun, Bien, Kato Change, Wakadinali, Nikita Kering, and Bensoul are all featured, showing that Kenya’s music scene is bursting with export-ready talent cutting across genres like afropop, alt-R&B, gengetone, and afro-fusion.
