Gospel musician Betty Bayo, whose real name is Beatrice Mbugua, has passed away.

According to family sources, she died on Monday morning, November 10, 2025 while receiving treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

Her former partner, Pastor Victor Kanyari, told the Nation that the hit-maker had been battling leukaemia and was receiving treatment at the high dependency unit (HDU) at KNH.

“Betty has been in the hospital for one week. She died today at 5am.”

Bayo emerged in Kenya’s Kikuyu gospel scene and earned accolades for songs such as “11th Hour” among others.

Her other notable singles include Ngai Ti Mundu, Atasimama Nawe and Nikuhadwo.

Condition worsened

During a media briefing at Kenyatta National Hospital, Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina, speaking on behalf of the family, said the singer had suffered complications arising from cancer, which caused excessive bleeding.

“Together with the spouse (Hiram Gitau), the father of Betty’s children (Pastor Kanyari) and friends of Betty, we want to tell the members of the public that today, we have lost Betty Bayo,” she said.

She explained that the singer was first admitted to AAR Kiambu Road before being transferred to KNH on Friday, November 7, as her condition worsened.

“She has been unwell, suffering from leukaemia. She was suffering from excessive bleeding. The doctors tried to do their best… but by the will of God, she has rested. We are transferring her body to KU Referral.”

Fellow gospel musician Ben Githae told her fans that the family will release the official burial and funeral arrangements soon.

Her demise has shocked many, especially because her social media pages had remained active throughout her illness.

Her last post, shared on Sunday November 9, just a day before her death, was a Bible verse that read: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Just two days earlier, on Friday, November 7, she had posted another message: “If not for God, it could have been worse… may God protect you this night…Good night.”

Betty Bayo is widely recognised for her worship songs and inspirational lyrics.
