Why your cousins WhatsApp group is dead on arrival

Family

Most friendships between cousins stand the test of time only if their parents get along.

What you need to know:

  • Many cousins never go beyond that hastily formed WhatsApp group after a burial.
  • There is always that one convener of these meetings which take place after the burial.

But cousins, why? I ask this after a friend had me on the floor laughing after narrating a story about a cousin of hers that had ‘eaten’ their Sh300,000 savings. She and her other cousins made this shocking discovery last week while they were in the process of planning for Christmas, which they were all celebrating at their grandparents’ home upcountry somewhere in Murang’a County.

They had all been contributing money religiously since January this year, money that they entrusted to their able treasurer, whom they had all unanimously voted for, to hold this sensitive position. My friend explained that being perceived as the ‘richest’ among them, (she ran various businesses, had a big house and drove a big car) they had been convinced that she would not be interested in their small, small savings, since it was pocket change to her.
