It has been a while since chama members asked me to join them in their routine meetings. As you may be aware, chama is a women’s only welfare group of which I am the only male member. I attend meetings to give a professional perspective on sex
matters whenever members discuss matters of bedroom importance.
“One of our members noted a strange thing during the Christmas holidays and we want your opinion on it,” the chairlady said in starting off the meeting, “her husband ate a lot of groundnuts, supposedly to improve his sexual performance.”
“You may also remember that a man died after eating over 30 quail eggs, supposedly to enhance his libido,” added the vice-chairperson.
“Yes, and in my culture people chew a root called mkombero and they say it makes them do wonders in the bedroom,” said another member.
Members said that whenever they complained of reduced frequency, their husbands bought into the idea of eating certain foods to improve sex drive. They wanted to know if there really are foods that increase sexual desire, especially in men.
“You see, our men have become rather busy and stressed and most marriages are beginning to suffer because by the time they get to the bedroom, all they can do is snore; they have no desire and no energy to perform,” shouted a member amid laughter.
I found it important to discuss with chama members the old story of aphrodisiacs. Through the ages, men and women have desired to increase their sexual performance and have used certain foods and
herbs for this. Scientifically, there are foods that have been proven to improve sexual function. The foods contain nutrients that increase the levels of testosterone in the body.
Others contain dopamine which is known to cause sexual excitement. A few others improve blood flow to the sex organs thereby reducing incidences of erectile dysfunction.
“You better tell us about these foods! We have to help our men, as the saying goes, food is the way to a man’s heart and now we should add that it is a way to his manhood too,” said a member amid giggles.
Whenever you can, give your man watermelon. Up to 92 per cent of this fruit is water, but the remaining eight per cent contains some very important chemicals. Citrulline is one of the chemicals and is known to work the same way as Viagra by increasing
If watermelon is not in season, then go for avocado. Incidentally the term avocado is derived from a South American language meaning testicle because of its shape. The fruit contains folic acid, vitamin B6 and potassium, all of which are important in the
production of testosterone, thereby improving libido in both men and women.
If you fail to get watermen and avocado, then go for bananas. They are also rich in vitamin B and potassium and so important in testosterone production.
A number of foods are rich in zinc. Zinc is quite important in testosterone production. If you can get pumpkins, go specifically for the seeds. Most people throw away the seeds not knowing that they are rich in zinc. Cashew nuts and almonds are also rich in zinc. Additionally, they have a high content of selenium and vitamin E. This combination of chemicals not only boosts libido, but also increase fertility.
If you are a lover of tea then go for ginger tea or ginseng. These two are stimulants that enhance libido. In one study at the University of Hawaii, women taking ginseng supplements had a marked increase in their libido just in one month of use.
What is critical as you use ginseng and ginger products is that they should be of good quality. A number of products that claim to have the two have been found to have other harmful contents such as excessive sugars, thereby causing more harm than good.
Then there are proteins that you should always eat. Eggs are very important in boosting libido. Apart from the general richness in proteins that is critical for vitality and libido, they have L-arginine which has been shown to treat erectile dysfunction.
Further, eggs contain a vitamin which is needed for the synthesis of sex hormones.
If you like seafood then go for the oysters. Eaten raw, oysters have been used as aphrodisiacs for a long time. They contain zinc necessary for testosterone production. In addition, they contain dopamine which is known to cause excitement during sex.
Salmon, another product from the sea, is rich in omega-3, an important libido booster and is a good alternative to the oyster. Omega-3 is also found in walnuts and herrings.
In brief, it is possible for your man to eat at least one libido booster per day to sustain his vitality.
“Yes, and we are going to adjust our home menus to ensure that this happens,” concluded the chairperson as she called the meeting to an end. I had once again made my contribution to the chama and walked away satisfied to continue my work at the sexology clinic.
