Details of how a 62-year-old woman conspired with two other women to steal and traffic twin babies from Kisii County to Nairobi were revealed in a Nairobi court on Friday.
The accused, Rose Nyabeke Osoro, was arraigned before Milimani Law Courts Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku, who heard how the elderly woman and her accomplices allegedly executed their scheme October 14, 2020.
It is alleged that Ms Nyabeke collected the twins from her younger sister, Caroline Nyaboke Makori, in Machorinku village in Gucha Sub-county Kisii and moved with them to Ogembo where she was joined by one Lydia Nyaboke Charles.
The two women then embarked on a journey to Nairobi but the five-day-old twins fell ill along the way.
Upon arrival in Nairobi, the two women sought medical attention for the babies at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), where the condition of one of the babies worsened. The baby later died.
It was at that point that Nyabeke told the police that she had been hired by Nyaboke to assist her transport the babies to Nairobi.
The three woman have since been charged in court and their cases will be consolidated on December 9, 2020.
Lydia Nyaboke is facing four counts stealing the two babies from Ogembo Market in Kisii County and trafficking them to Nairobi on October 14, 2020.
She is also facing charges of abusing the two babies' vulnerability. Her co-accused, Ms Nyabeke, was granted a cash bail of Sh100,000.
As the two women were being charged, three medical officers, among them the Deputy Medical Officer Nairobi Metropolitan Services Dr Musa Mohamed Ramadhan, and two social league clinicians from Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital were also charged before Ms Mutuku.
Dr Ramadhan, who was previously the administrator of Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital before he was transferred to the NMS medical docket, denied charges of trafficking and neglect to duty.
