A key suspect in the murder of British national Campbell Scott, has been charged virtually before the Makadara High Court.
Alex Mutua, who is detained in prison custody, denied the capital offence when he appeared before Justice James Wakiaga.
He pleaded “not guilty” to the charge that was read to him from the Industrial Area Prison and Correctional Center, where he is being held.
Mutua has been charged with murdering Campbell Scott on February 16, 2025, in Pipeline within Embakasi sub-county, Nairobi.
Mutua applied to be released on bond, but the prosecution opposed the application.
A prosecuting counsel asked the court to allow the investigating officer to file an affidavit detailing reasons for denying bail.
Simultaneously, the judge called for a pre-bail report to be presented within 21 days.
“This court directs that a pre-bail report in respect of the accused person be availed within 21 days. The report shall also include the victim’s impact report before a decision on whether to free the suspect on bond is delivered,” Justice Wakiaga directed.
He scheduled the case for mention on June 17, 2025, for pre-trial directions and submissions on the suspect’s bail application.
Scott was reported missing on February 17, 2025, and his decomposing body was later discovered in a thicket in the expansive Makongo Forest in Makueni County.
It is suspected that the accused lured the foreigner to a fake business meeting before he disappeared.
One of the suspects sought in connection with the murder, Samuel Musembi Kamitu, allegedly attempted to take poison before stabbing himself to death in a hideout within Nairobi’s Dandora estate.
Mutua was charged alongside another suspect, Albunus Mutinda Nzioki, who has since been turned into a prosecution witness.
