Commuters hit as matatus raise fares by 25pc
FARES UP: Matatu operators announce 25 percent increase in bus fares nationwide, association chairman Albert Karakacha cites rising fuel costs.
"Most matatus use diesel. We've consulted widely with our members and agreed on increasing fares by 25 percent," he said.
"It's not our wish. Please bear with us. We're urging the government to go back to the subsidy that was there before. It will be easier to bring down the cost of fuel."
On his part, Peter Murima, chairman of Motorists Association of Kenya, said: "We are shocked, angry and we feel betrayed. Diesel is the backbone of transport. This will affect the business sector immensely."
Prices of two Petrol Stations in Eldoret City, Uasin Gishu County, on April 15, 2026, after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced price increases on Tuesday. Petrol increased by Sh28.69 per Litre, while Diesel increased by Sh40.30 per Litre.
