Court shuts media out of Utumishi Girls murder case
The nine Utumishi Girls Senior School students suspected of torching their school dormitory killing 16 colleagues before the Naivasha Law Court on June 3, 2026.
The High Court in Kibera has ordered that media be kept out of the Utumishi Girls murder case, in which eight suspects are accused of killing 16 fellow students.
The judge issued the order on Friday during a virtual hearing of the case.
The eight suspects, who are currently being detained at Kabete Juvenile Remand Home, followed the proceedings from police custody and were not brought to open court.
The High Court ordered the eight suspects to undergo a mental health assessment during this weekend to establish whether they are fit to stand trial.
"You are charged with the murder of 16 girls at Utumishi Girls Secondary School. You are not required to plead to the charges for now," the judge said.
The case will be mentioned on July 1, 2026 for further directions.
