Day of drama as MP John Kaguchia vanishes from court, surrenders then freed
Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia, who had vanished from Milimani court in Nairobi, has surrendered after Magistrate Teresia Nyagena ordered his advocates to produce him. He was then freed on Sh250,000 cash bail.
Earlier, the MP left court premises in dramatic circumstances before the magistrate could deliver her ruling on the validity of the charges against him and issue directions on allegations of contempt of court.
Magistrate Nyangena had briefly adjourned proceedings when Kaguchia was whisked away by his lawyers and fellow MPs, who relied on earlier High Court orders directing his release.
Police officers appeared caught off guard as the Mukurwe-ini MP exited court precincts.
They did not immediately stop his departure, while the defence team maintained they were acting in compliance with existing High Court orders.

However, he later reappeared in court at about 4.30pm while accompanied by Senator John Methu. The magistrate then freed him on bail.
Upon being released, he was whisked from the court dock by seven police officers.

The charges
The MP was presented in court on Tuesday morning, a day after he was arrested over statements he made at a rally in Nyeri County.
He was charged that on August 1, 2026 in Kieni Consistuency, he behaved in an offensive conduct to breach the peace.
Before he was apprehended, he was at Royal Media Services (RMS) offices in Kilimani, Nairobi, for the entire Sunday night, saying police officers outside were determined to arrest him over his remarks.
The lawmaker was escorted from the media house by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers Monday morning, driven to the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road and later transferred to Kamukunji police station, where lawyers, opposition politicians and his supporters spent the better part of the day demanding access to him and questioning the legality of his detention.
