Dr Mutiso murder: Cop and three family members remanded

Police officer Elijah Kimoi, who allegedly fatally shot Dr Victoria Mutiso on July 29, 2026, has been charged alongside the family of Rose Mbithe.
Ms Mbithe, her children Chris and Angella and Police Constable Kimoi will undergo psychiatric examinations during their detention to establish whether they are mentally fit to stand trial.
The court ordered they remain in custody for 28 days before they are brought to court to plead to charges over the murder of Dr Mutiso.
Justice Kanyi Kimondo issued the order on Thursday after the prosecution informed the court that investigations into the July 29 killing had been completed.
They are accused of murdering Dr Mutiso at about 9.30am on July 29 along Mawenzi Road in the Kilimani area of Nairobi.
The four were not required to enter a plea on Thursday because the court had not received psychiatric reports confirming their fitness to stand trial.
Prosecuting counsel Jalson Makori and Victor Owiti told Justice Kimondo that the four could not be asked to plead because it was their first appearance before a High Court judge.
Justice Kimondo subsequently explained the murder charge to the four suspects and directed that they be taken to Mbagathi Level 5 Hospital for psychiatric assessment by a government psychiatrist.
The judge ordered that the examinations be conducted within 14 days of their incarceration and that the reports be filed before the suspects return to court for plea taking.
Ms Mbithe and her daughter Angella will be held at Lang'ata Women’s Prison, while Chris and PC Kimoi will be remanded at the Industrial Area Prison.
Justice Kimondo also directed the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to consolidate the murder charge against PC Kimoi with the case facing Ms Mbithe and her children.
Because PC Kimoi had not secured a lawyer, the judge directed the Deputy Registrar of the High Court's Criminal Division to appoint one to represent him.
Court filings by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) indicate that preliminary investigations have linked PC Kimoi to the shooting of Dr Mutiso.
An affidavit filed by investigating officer Corporal Romana Oduor states that PC Kimoi is the police officer suspected of shooting the doctor.
Before the case reached the High Court, DCI's homicide department had arrested six suspects, including Daniel Mwangi Njoroge and Kevin Ngugi Kinuthia.
PC Kimoi, Mr Njoroge and Mr Kinuthia had previously been detained for 30 days to allow detectives to conduct investigations.
The case has since widened, with detectives pursuing two police officers who remain at large and are suspected of being part of the alleged plot.
Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang and Police Constable Bett Kiplangat Collins are being sought as investigators piece together what they describe as a chain involving alleged financiers, police officers, a gunman, a driver and a motorcycle rider.
