Homicide detectives have arrested the owner of a vehicle allegedly used to dump the body of Edgar Mokua, a quantity surveyor and lecturer at the Technical University of Kenya who was drugged at a bar in Lavington then later found dead.
The arrest marks the first major breakthrough in investigations into the murder case that has exposed what police believe is a sophisticated drink-spiking and robbery syndicate, commonly known as "mchele" gangs, operating in Nairobi.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said detectives arrested the suspect in Ruiru's Blue Estate after forensic investigations linked his grey Toyota Ractis to the disposal of Mokua's body.
"The suspect is currently in custody, undergoing processing pending arraignment, as investigations into the murder continue," the DCI said.
"Thanks to forensic intelligence, investigators established that a grey Toyota Ractis was the vehicle responsible for dropping Mokua's body at the scene before speeding away."
The arrest comes weeks after Mokua, 53, disappeared after a night out in Nairobi. He was last seen on the evening of July 7 when he left his Lavington residence before spending several hours at Kettle Club in the company of two men and a woman.

According to investigators, the group later moved to Ibiza Club at Lavington Mall, where Mokua remained behind after his companions left. This was the last confirmed sighting of him alive.
His family reported him missing after he failed to return home, prompting investigations by officers at Muthangari Police Station.
The following morning, police in Kasarani received a report of an unidentified body lying near Woodcreek Academy in Roysambu. Crime scene investigators found no visible injuries and transferred the body to the Nairobi Funeral Home.
Days later, Mokua's family identified the body. A postmortem returned an inconclusive cause of death, with toxicological analysis expected to establish whether he had been drugged before his death.
Investigators established that Sh300,000 was transferred from his mobile phone to a woman's account shortly before his body was discovered.
One woman, two drugged men
The investigation then took a dramatic turn five days later when another businessman reported being drugged after meeting a woman at a bar in Ruiru. The man told police he had been drinking when a woman approached and asked to join him. He remembers only the first few minutes of their conversation before blacking out.
When he regained consciousness several hours later, his phone, wallet and cash were missing.
After replacing his SIM card, he discovered that Sh500,000 had been transferred from his mobile money account. Police also established that additional loans had allegedly been taken using his phone before the money was transferred to the same woman.
DCI detectives reviewing CCTV footage from the Ruiru establishment made a critical discovery: the woman seen with the businessman is the same person captured on surveillance cameras with Mokua shortly before his disappearance.
Investigators then followed the money trail and found striking similarities in both incidents. The money transferred from both victims first landed in the woman's account before portions were immediately sent to the same man and another woman.
Police now believe the three individuals are operating as an organised gang targeting affluent men in bars before stupefying them and transferring money from their phones.
Detectives say the trio disappeared from their known residences shortly after Mokua's death and have since been difficult to trace.
Two years ago, the DCI warned the public about criminal gangs targeting patrons in bars and nightclubs, saying many reported cases involved men being befriended by women before being drugged and robbed.
The agency advised members of the public to keep their drinks within sight at all times and avoid accepting drinks from strangers.
