CS Ogamba on Butere Girls play: Malala is neither a teacher nor the director

Government did not stop Butere Girls from staging "Echoes of war", says CS Ogamba

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba now says that the government did not ban Butere Girls High School students from performing their play during the National Drama Festivals in Nakuru.

CS Ogamba said the students refused to perform and decided to walk off the stage.

Speaking to the press in Mombasa, the CS said the girls decided not to perform without being accompanied by former Kakamega senator Cleophas Malala, the playwright behind the piece dubbed ‘Echoes of War’.

"The government did not stop Butere Girls High School students from performing...they were allowed to perform at 8am, but when they came to the stage after singing the national anthem, one of them stepped forward and said that they were not willing to perform without their director," said the CS.

‘We want our director’: Butere girls boycott performing ‘Echoes of War’ play, demand for Malala

Mr Ogamba said Mr Malala is not a teacher at the national school and holds no official position.

"He is not a teacher at Butere Girls or the director of that play. So the students, on their own volition, decided not to participate," added the CS.

He said he was not aware of any violence meted out against the students, as he is in Mombasa to officiate the national school sports activities.

"Which violence? I am here with you. Once I get the details, I will be able to answer that question," he said Thursday morning.
