Teachers ordered back to school to prepare for reopening

Teachers have been asked to start reporting back to schools Tuesday to familiarise themselves with health protocols ahead of reopening which will be announced later.
Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO Nancy Macharia Monday said that teachers have until Monday September 28, 2020 to be in their respective schools.
“It is now time for teachers to report back to schools. We are asking teachers to continue being creative and innovative. Therefore, all teachers must report by latest Monday next week,” Mrs Macharia said.
She was speaking during a stakeholders’ briefing at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) in Nairobi during the presentation of a report from the Covid-19 Education Response Committee.

Reopening date
At the same time, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha said the reopening of schools will be announced only after stakeholders agree on an appropriate date.
“It is about time to call our children to go back to schools. Teachers will be coming to prepare schools for reopening,” said Prof Magoha.
He said the actual reopening dates will be agreed on and declared by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The CS admitted that schools are in bad state with majority of them having unkempt grass which has not being cut since March 15 when they closed.
He said the ministry will ensure that the Sh1.9 billion economic stimulus package project to supply desks, lockers and chairs will not be a scandal.

“We are going to ensure that 15 schools in every sub-county will receive the desks and that only enlisted jua kali people will be given tenders to make and supply the desks in a transparent process,” he said.
Prof Magoha also announced that final year science students have been allowed back to universities to do their practicals in order to be ready for graduation at the end of the year. The CS said that the students must observe Covid-19 rules.
The Cs said the Covid-19 Education Response Committee has developed schedules for reopening of schools which will be discussed later this week by the larger national stakeholders’ committee chaired by Interior CS Fred Matiang’i and Health CS Mutahi Kagwe.
