Comedian Eric Omondi charged with obstructing motorists

Activist Eric Omondi has been freed by a Milimani court after denying charges of obstructing traffic along Kimathi Street last month.
Mr Omondi was freed on a personal bond of Sh100,000 after spending the weekend in police custody. The charge stated that he committed the offence on May 18 along Kimathi Street.
The charge stated that he offloaded 120 empty 10-litre jerry cans from a lorry, thereby obstructing the free flow of traffic.

Mr Omondi applied to be freed on bond saying he is not a flight risk and that police know his place of residence in the city.
While urging the court to free the accused on bond, his lawyers, Danstan Omari, Martina Swiga and Babu Owino, told the court that the police had detained the accused illegally for 72 hours.
Omari said the empty jerry cans were being taken to some needy city residents for water storage.
“Unlike a few rich Kenyans, the majority of Kenyans residing in Nairobi live below the poverty level and cannot afford to put tanks on the rooftops of their houses to store and therefore use jerry cans,” he told the court.

Swiga said Omondi runs a group known as 'Sisi Kwa Sisi', which allegedly assists many Kenyans and cannot be criminalised by the police for taking jerry cans to those in need.
Owino urged the court to release the accused on free bond, stating that he had been arrested in a cruel manner while boarding a plane to Kisumu to host an event.
Owino, who is also Embakasi East MP, told the court that the accused lost income as a result of the arrest.
Babu also requested the release of Omondi's electronic gadgets, confiscated from him during the arrest, saying they are his tools of trade, and he is now rendered jobless.
Owino told the court he made frantic efforts to have Omondi released on police bail in vain.
“Police circumvented article 49 of the constitution which requires a suspect to be released on bond pending investigations and prosecution", he added.
Owino said there was no traffic to obstruct since on May 18, 2026, as matatus had called for a strike over the increase of fuel prices.
The prosecution did not oppose bond but added that the phones are being used as evidence.
In a short ruling, he was released on a personal bond of Sh100,000.
The case will be mentioned on June 22 for directions.
