Fuel shortage: CS Wandayi blames technical hitches for stockouts

The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum has moved to dispel concerns over fuel shortages, announcing that a technical and administrative hitch that disrupted supply at isolated filling stations has been resolved.
In a statement released on Wednesday, May 6, 2025, Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi confirmed that the hitch had hindered the optimal uptake of petroleum products by several oil marketing companies within the downstream supply chain. This led to localised stockouts and anxiety among motorists in various parts of the country.
"The matter has since been resolved, and the Ministry is working closely with industry stakeholders to normalise deliveries," stated CS Wandayi in the statement.
The Ministry noted that restocking efforts are currently underway across the affected stations. According to the government's projections, normal fuel supply is expected to be restored nationwide by the end of the day today.
Addressing potential public anxiety, the Cabinet Secretary reassured Kenyans that the country maintains sufficient fuel reserves and that the current situation was a logistical delay rather than a shortage of product.
"The Ministry wishes to reassure Kenyans that the country has adequate fuel stocks. There should be no cause for alarm," the statement continued.
