Police arrest Kevin Kang'ethe's brother, his girlfriend
What you need to know:
- Last week, Mr Kang’ethe, 40, made a daring escape from Muthaiga Police Station where he was being held.
- Detectives had also arrested and locked up a Nairobi-based lawyer in connection with Mr Kang'ethe's escape.
A brother of fugitive murder suspect Kevin Kinyanjui Kang’ethe was nabbed by detectives attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday and questioned over his bold escape from lawful custody.
The detectives also went ahead and arrested his brother's girlfriend, who was also grilled over the escape as DCI sleuths work round the clock to trace his whereabouts.
“It is true that the two were questioned over what they know following the escape of the murder suspect from lawful custody,” a police officer told the Nation.
In addition, Ms Beatrice Ng’ethe, a lawyer who is related to Mr Kang’ethe and who had last week on Friday been nabbed by DCI officers from her home, spent the better part of Monday at Muthaiga Police Station where she was assisting with investigations.
“I am at the station assisting the police...We shall talk later,” she told the Nation.
The lawyer was set free on the evening of Sunday, February 11, 2024, after paying a Sh100,000 cash bail. A sleuth privy to the matter said that Ms Ng’ethe became a person of interest in the investigations after it emerged that she was in constant communication with the fugitive.
A day before the murder suspect fled Pangani Police Station, Ms Ng’ethe had gone to have a word with him as he was seeking legal advice.
Ms Ng’ethe denied knowledge of Kang'ethe's plan to escape.
It is now emerging that Mr Kang’ethe met with his brother after fleeing lawful custody.
Mr Kang’ethe was to spend time at the station in cell number four as he awaited a case on his expatriation to the US, where he is accused of murdering Margaret Mbitu. The US has already issued a warrant of arrest against him.
