Members of the National Assembly will resume sittings on Tuesday after a month-long recess, with the Budget and Appropriations Committee expected to table its report on its consideration of the government revenue estimates for the 2026/27 financial year.
The committee chaired by Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi is expected to table the report on June 2 2026, a move that will pave way for consideration of the Estimates in the Committee of Supply and attendant legislations, including the Appropriation Bill, 2026, and the Finance Bill, 2026.
The committee has been meeting various stakeholders and also moving around the country sensitizing members of the public over the contents of the 2026/27 budget estimates as contained in the Finance Bill, 2026
The Finance Bill, 2026 will also be read for the first time paving the way for the Finance and National Planning committee to start engaging the public over its contents.
The Bill has already sparked debate across the country with the United Opposition leaders threatening to call for street protests and bring back the ghosts of anti-government demonstrations witnessed in 2024.
National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi is expected to read this year’s budget on June 11 2026, in line with Section 40 of the Public Finance Management Act.
This date has been agreed upon by the member States of the East African Community (EAC), as been the tradition with the established practice of synchronising the budget speech day.
The lawmakers will also consider various amendments by the Senate to the Division of Revenue Bill, 2026 and the County Allocation of Revenue Bill, 2026.
The Division of Revenue Bill provides for allocation of revenues raised by the national government to the national and county levels of government. The Bill was passed by the National Assembly in March 2026 and forwarded to the Senate for consideration.
The Senate however made some amendments to the Bill hence must be considered again by the National Assembly for concurrence.
Former KRA Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga will also know his fate on Tuesday on whether his nomination for appointment as the Kenyan High Commissioner to Ottawa, Canada has been approved. The Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations Committee is expected to table its report.
The committee chaired by Belgut MP Nelson Koech vetted Mr Wattanga on May 14 2026 and is expected to table its report on whether the former taxman is suitable to represent the country in Canada.
The House will also make its decision regarding the petition received from the Environment Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa regarding de-gazettement of specified sections of four public forests and determination of related claims to the forests, which are in South Nandi Forest at Chepkumia Area, Turbo Forest at Manzini Area, Mount Elgon Forest at Chepkyuk Area, and Kakamega Forest at Shiru/Shaviringa Area.
In her petition to the House in November last year, Dr Barasa urged MPs regularise the four public forest land in order to allow those that have settled there from 1980s to legally acquire title deeds.
Dr Barasa is seeking the nod of the lawmakers to degazzete 989.17 hectares of South Nandi forest, 1,241 hectares of Turbo forest, 4,647 hectares of Mt Elgon forest and 94.99 hectares of Shiru and 36 hectares of Shaviringa both in Kakamega forest.
“The ministry presents this petition pursuant to Articles 36, 62 and 119 of the constitution as well as section 34 of the Forest Conservation and Management Act Cap 385 Laws of Kenya. The Forest Conservation Act that is giving effect to Article 69 of the Constitution with regard to forest resources. Section 34 of the Act empowers any person to submit a petition to parliament to recommend a proposal to vary the boundary or revoke registration,” reads the petition.
