Two woman representatives on Monday led a demonstration demanding the arrest and prosecution of a man accused of defiling and impregnating his two underage daughters in Kirinyaga County.

Kirinyaga Woman Representative Wangui Ngirici and her Uasin Gishu counterpart Gladys Shollei condemned the incident and accused the police of taking too long to apprehend the suspect.

They noted that the man had committed a serious crime and vowed to continue piling pressure on the police until justice is done. Tension mounted at Gathaka village as the demonstrators poured into the streets in protests.

Police, however, watched from a distance as the demonstrators, who abandoned their work for the better part of the morning, joined the leaders to air their grievances.

Sexual offences charges

The MPS observed that the man had destroyed the lives of the children who are in primary school.

“What the father has done to his daughters is unacceptable. The suspect should be apprehended and arraigned in court to face sexual offences charges," Ms Ngirici said.

They lamented that one of the defiled children has dropped out of school after she delivered a child, allegedly fathered by the suspect.

"One of the girls is no longer in school. It is sad she has become a mother without completing her education," said Ms Shollei.

The MPS noted that cases of defilement are on the rise in the region and told the police to rein in those implicated in the vice.

Heavily pregnant

The man’s relatives said he had been sexually abusing his daughters aged 14 and 16 years secretly until he impregnated them.

“He would warn them of dire consequences if they revealed to their mother what he had done to them," one of the relatives said.

The mother only came to learn of the man’s uncouth behaviour when the girls became heavily pregnant. It was then that the matter was reported to the police. Sensing danger, the man went into hiding.

The younger daughter is five month pregnant while the elder one has a seven-month old baby.

Kirinyaga West police boss Joseph Mwika denied that his officers were reluctant to take action.

Reported late

“The victims have recorded statements and we are pursuing the suspect who went underground immediately he learnt he is being sought for questioning," he added.

He asked family members and the MPs to be patient as police were doing everything possible to bring the suspect to book.

Mr Mwika blamed the delay of the arrest of the suspect on the children's mother.

“The mother reported the matter when one of her daughters had already given birth and the other was pregnant. Had she informed us on time, the suspect would be in cells or prison. Police treat defilement cases with the seriousness they deserve," he said.
