Police officers who exhaust their National Hospital Insurance Fund covers will still receive treatment following the release of Sh200 million by the government to help offset their bills.

Interior Permanent Secretary Karanja Kibicho said the funds will be made available once the Insurer releases the list of eligible officers.

"Under the arrangement, police officers who exhaust their yearly benefits but still need medical services are required to make ex gratia claims through a committee constituted by Inspector General," a statement from the Ministry clarified.

The PS revealed this while appearing before the Public Accounts Committee to respond to claims of delays in the release of compensation to officers who suffered accidents and deaths in the line of duty.

The issue had been raised by the Office of the Auditor-General for the 2020/2021 financial year.

The PS acknowledged the claims citing reviews and authentication of the claims by the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services as the cause of the delays.

Mr Kibicho further told the committee that sh2B of pending bills to suppliers of the affordable housing scheme for the National Police Service for the financial year 2020/2021 have been cleared.

Pending construction of Buma, Laisamis, Mbalambala and another in South Nyanza have been pushed to next year due to budgetary constraints.

Dr Kibicho also added that the government has put in place mechanisms to fasten passport processing from three months to 14 days.
