Celebrations to mark Eid al-Fitr swept across Kenya on Friday as Muslim faithful gathered in large numbers for morning prayers and communal festivities.

In Nairobi and other major towns, worshippers converged at mosques and open grounds at dawn, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadhan with prayers, reflection and charity.

The day was characterized by vibrant scenes of families dressed in colorful attire, warm greetings of “Eid Mubarak. Along the coast and in urban centres alike, communities came together in a show of unity and cultural diversity.

Eid al-Fitr, a significant event in the Islamic calendar, emphasizes gratitude, generosity and the strengthening of social bonds, values that were evident in the celebrations captured across the country.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen declared Friday, March 20, a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr as Muslims across Kenya prepare for the official sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon, which determines the exact end of Ramadhan.

Mr Murkomen made the announcement through a special gazette notice dated March 18, 2026.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that, Friday, the 20th March, 2026, shall be a Public Holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr.” read the notice.
