Media personalities Yvonne Okwara and Zubeida Kananu have been cleared to contest for the presidency of the Kenya Editors Guild (KEG) in the upcoming elections.

The KEG on Tuesday announced the list of validly nominated candidates for the much-anticipated elections.

As the presidential race heats up, veteran journalists Ms Okwara (Citizen TV) and Ms Kananu (KTN) are set to battle it out for the top seat on Saturday, April 12.

Ms Kananu is the incumbent president.

An official notice from the KEG Returning Officer, Advocate Sophie Kaibiria, marked the beginning of a short but intense campaign period that will run until midnight on April 11.

“With respect to the contested positions, the publication of this Notice marks the official commencement of official campaigns in line with section 4.1 of the KEG Election Guidelines and terminates at midnight on 11th April 2025,” read the official statement.

Ms Okwara and Ms Kananu, both respected journalists, are expected to outline their visions for the guild at various campaign events this week. A debate is scheduled for Wednesday evening.

Candidates are required to strictly follow the Elections Code of Ethics set out in the official campaign guidelines.

The presidential race is not the only contest drawing attention.

Toepista Nabusoba and Agnes Mwangangi are vying for the Council Member (radio), while Nathan Nayere Masambu faces Julius Ombui Bosire for the academia position.

The candidates elected unopposed include Francis Openda as Vice President, Nation Media Group Newsletters Editor Kenfrey Kiberenge for online, Linda Bach representing print, Millicent Awuor for television, and trustees Martin Masai, Ruth Nesoba and Mbugua Ng’ang’a.

KEG was established to promote professional journalism, credibility and safeguard editorial independence.

The election will be conducted according to the KEG Constitution of 2023 and Elections Policy Guidelines issued in March 2025.

Results are expected to be announced shortly after voting concludes on April 12, with the new leadership team taking office immediately thereafter.
