Mr Geoffrey Odundo has taken over as the new CEO of the Nation Media Group with a promise to accelerate the digital transformation agenda at East Africa's largest news organisation.

Mr Odundo took over on Monday (April 7) from his predecessor, Stephen Gitagama, who served NMG in various capacities for 17 years.

The NMG Chief Financial Officer, Richard Tobiko, served as the interim Group CEO since Mr Gitagama's departure on August 1, 2024.

The NMG Board Chairman, Dr Wilfred Kiboro, introduced Mr Odundo to the Nation employees during the first quarter staff communication meeting held on Friday last week.

"I am honoured to have this opportunity to lead East Africa's premier media group. NMG has been on a journey of digital transformation, we can accelerate this and ensure that we're on the cutting edge of technology in terms of speedy delivery of accurate, user-driven news," said Mr Odundo in his inaugural address to staff.

Mr Odundo, who joins NMG from CPF Group where he was Executive Adviser, is also a former CEO of the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE).

He has previously held other senior executive positions, including as the first Managing Director and CEO of Kingdom Securities.

The Group chairman assured him of full support from the board and employees of the company.

“Mr Odundo is an accomplished senior executive and a seasoned investment banker with vast experience in leadership, including serving in the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), where he spearheaded various market innovations and achieved record-breaking milestones during his tenure between 2015 and 2024. I am confident that I can count on you to extend your customary welcome and support to Geoffrey as he joins NMG to strengthen our team in our continuing endeavour to deliver our mandate to the societies we serve,” said Dr Kiboro.

The new NMG boss said he will lean on his experience in the financial sector and the capital markets to accelerate the group's growth while ensuring the media house continues to play its important role of influencing positive change in society.

"I have closely interacted with the media and seen the important role it plays in highlighting the running of the economy, democratic space and the social fabric of the country. My aim is to see NMG become the leading source of news across all demographics," said Mr Odundo. "In terms of talent, it is about bringing the best out of people, making sure they feel good about their place of work and ensuring everyone is rewarded for their contribution," he said when he was announced as the new Group CEO.
