For nearly seven years, the haunting disappearance of Joyce Syombua and her two young children remained one of Kenya’s most chilling family murder mysteries.
The mother of two had travelled from Nairobi to Nanyuki in October 2019 after the father of her children, then Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Major Peter Mugure Mwaura, invited her and the children for what appeared to be a family reunion.

Instead, investigators would later discover, it was a carefully orchestrated trap.
On Friday, the High Court in Nairobi brought the long-running case to a dramatic conclusion after finding the former military officer guilty of murdering Joyce, 31, her daughter Shanice Maua, 10, and five-year-old Prince Michael before burying their bodies in a shallow grave at Thigithu in Laikipia County.
Delivering the judgment at the Milimani High Court, Justice Martin Muya ruled that prosecutors had proved beyond reasonable doubt that Mugure meticulously planned the killings, executed them inside the Nanyuki Airbase and recruited another person to help dispose of the bodies.

The conviction closes one of the country’s most disturbing criminal trials, one that exposed how a serving military officer allegedly turned on his own family and went to extraordinary lengths to erase every trace of the crime.
Court records showed that Joyce travelled to Nanyuki with the children on October 25, 2019, after Mugure invited them to visit him at the Kenya Air Force Base.
The following day, the family was seen leaving the military base together before having lunch at Kilimara Springs Hotel.
Justice Muya found that after returning to the military base, Mugure murdered the three before secretly plotting to dispose of their bodies.
“Evidence shows that the accused murdered his wife and two children, stacked their bodies in body bags and hid them in the boot of his car before burying them at Thigithu,” the judge ruled.
According to the judgment, the killings were not spontaneous.

Evidence presented during the trial showed that three days earlier, Mugure had visited the Thigithu area with another officer. Documents produced in court confirmed the trip, persuading the judge that he had already identified a secluded burial site before carrying out the murders.
“This goes to show that the accused had hatched the plot to murder the deceased persons by ensuring he had a hidden, secure place to bury the bodies even before killing them,” Justice Muya said.
One of the most powerful witnesses against the former officer was Collins Pamba, who admitted helping dispose of the bodies.
Pamba testified that Mugure called him to his house, where he found Joyce’s body inside a transparent body bag, while the bodies of the two children had been placed in a bathtub.

He told the court that the bodies were tied with ropes before being squeezed into the boot of Mugure’s vehicle. The spare tyre had been removed to create enough space.
The two men then drove out of the military installation without attracting suspicion and buried the bodies in a shallow grave before covering them with soil.
Although Pamba admitted participating in the disposal of the bodies, he entered into a plea bargain agreement with the prosecution, pleaded guilty to a lesser offence and was sentenced to five years in prison.
Justice Muya said his testimony was credible because it was supported by independent forensic and circumstantial evidence.
DNA analysis by the Government Chemist confirmed that the remains recovered from the shallow grave belonged to Joyce and the two children.
The tests further established, with a 99.9 per cent probability, that Mugure was the biological father of Shanice and Prince Michael, demolishing his attempt to distance himself from the family.
An autopsy by Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor found that Joyce died from severe blunt-force injuries, while both children had been strangled.
Evidence showed that Joyce had previously sued Mugure for child maintenance and obtained a court order requiring him to pay Sh25, 000 every month for the children’s upkeep.
Prosecutors told the court that he made only one payment before persuading Joyce to travel to Nanyuki with the children.
Justice Muya rejected Mugure’s defence that he had handed the children to one of Joyce’s friends after spending time with them.
The judge noted that the alleged friend was never identified and that overwhelming evidence showed the family never left the military base alive.
“It is the accused who lured the three deceased persons to his place of work. They spent the night in his house, food was served to them, and their bodies were later seen being loaded into the accused’s vehicle,” the judge said.
“There is both direct and circumstantial evidence, and I find no reason to fault the prosecution’s case.”

Throughout the lengthy trial, investigators painstakingly reconstructed the family’s final days using witness testimony, mobile phone records, forensic science and DNA analysis.
Their work ultimately persuaded the court that the killings were carefully planned rather than an act of sudden violence.
The disappearance of Joyce and her children shocked the country in 2019, not only because of the brutality of the crime but also because it involved a serving KDF officer accused of killing his own family and recruiting a colleague to help conceal the murders.
Justice Muya convicted the former KDF officer on all three counts of murder, concluding that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and that the killings were deliberate, calculated and followed by an elaborate attempt to conceal the evidence.
The former soldier will be sentenced on July 14, 2026.
