Kenya backs UN resolution for 'fair and lasting peace' in Ukraine
Ukrainian Armed Forces fire a BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launch system towards Russian troops, amid Russia's attack on Ukraine, near the frontline town of Chasiv Yar in Donetsk region, Ukraine January 15, 2026.
Kenya has called for a peaceful resolution to the Russia–Ukraine conflict, warning that its consequences extend far beyond the warring countries, affecting Africa economically and socially.
Speaking during the launch of the Africa Centre for the Study of Russia, Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing'Oei said the ongoing war has no end in sight through military means, adding that the losses in human lives and economic terms are “colossal.”
“It is really the prayer of the Kenyan government that a path be forged for the resolution, the peaceful resolution of this conflict, so that the brotherly people of Russia and the brotherly people of Ukraine can come together and build a shared future together,” said the PS
The PS revealed that some Kenyans have found themselves directly involved in the fighting in Ukraine, raising serious safety and legal concerns. These individuals, reportedly drawn into the conflict through various circumstances, face life-threatening conditions on the frontlines with families back home anxiously awaiting news of their safety.
“We have implored time and again that there is no end in sight to this conflict via military means. The losses that are being occasioned in terms of life, but most fundamentally the economic losses are colossal. Indeed there are a number of Kenyans who are now caught in the twists in this arena. Many families are struggling because their children have somehow found themselves in this arena and in this war,” he said
The government has acknowledged the complexity of the situation, noting that it is working closely with the Russian Embassy and its teams in Moscow to establish the whereabouts of these nationals, provide consular support and explore avenues for their safe return.
“We are working together with His Excellency, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation, to facilitate a visit by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi in the next couple of weeks. And part of that visit is to strengthen our existing bilateral relations, but also speak to this predicament.
“It is our sincere hope that we will find a way in which those Kenyans who are caught in the twists in this theatre, you know, find their way back home and the remains of those who have eventually have been lost to repatriated back again,” he added.
This comes after Kenya joined the majority of United Nations (UN) member states in backing a landmark resolution aimed at promoting a comprehensive, fair, and lasting peace in Ukraine, despite abstentions from the United States (US) and several African nations.
Mr Sing’Oei confirmed Kenya’s position as the UN marked the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Speaking during the Commemoration of the Ukraine Invasion, Canadian High Commissioner to Kenya Joshua Tabah warned that the conflict’s impact extends beyond Ukraine, fueling global food shortages, driving up fuel prices and exposing vulnerable African citizens to exploitation.
