A medical doctor has been rescued from his abductors after they allegedly demanded a ransom.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Thursday said Emmanuel Kerich was accosted at Juja City Mall, forced into a car and driven away.

The police report did not indicate when the victim was abducted.

The arrest of one of the gang members, who was part of a three-man group, was made by detectives from Athi River Police Station in collaboration with members of the public.

The suspect allegedly demanded Sh3 million from the victim and tortured him.

"The victim, Emmanuel Kerich, was reportedly accosted while in the company of friends at Juja City Mall by three men who handcuffed him before forcing him into a Subaru Forester," a police report says in part.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle in which Dr Kerich was bundled into had tampered number plates to conceal its identity during the abduction.

After the abduction, the suspects are said to have driven the victim through several locations, torturing him and demanding the ransom before proceeding towards Athi River.

Police, acting on intelligence and with the help of members of the public, trailed and intercepted the vehicle along Mavemba–Mugoya Road in Athi River.

Sensing that they were being tracked, two suspects managed to escape, while one suspect was arrested.

Police said investigations into the matter are underway as the search for the two escapees continues.
