Koimburi abduction puzzle: Police target Juja MP's allies with longer detention
Juja MP George Koimburi.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is seeking 15 days to keep detaining three allies of MP George Koimburi, among them Juja Constituency Development Fund (CDF) Chairman Peter Kiratu, over what they termed as a stage-managed abduction. The other two are David Macharia Gatana and Cirus Kieru Muhia.
However, on Thursday, an attempt by DCI officers to secure a court hearing flopped as the chief magistrate had already left for the day.
The three allies of the Juja MP ended up not appearing in court since they had been brought in late.
They stayed inside vehicles as the police tried to get a court to present them in to beat the 24-hour timeline.
The police had to drive them back in three Subarus that had brought them in. They will now be arraigned tomorrow.
The trio is under investigation for allegedly helping Mr Koimburi fake his abduction.
According to papers filed in court, police allege the three kidnapped the MP from Full Gospel Ebenezer Church in Mugutha. They also insist that Mr Koimburi was lodged at a hotel on the night he was allegedly in captivity and being tortured.
Koimburi 'ill'
Police also say Mr Koimburi remains critically ill as alleged by close friends and family members, but that the nature of his illness is not yet known because his doctors are yet to share his medical reports.
They also argue that the matter is of grave national security concern since besides being a sitting MP, he's allied to a newly formed party opposed to the current government, hence it has elicited heated political opinions that could easily result in serious violence.
"The allegations have since created panic, fear and sharp political opinion in the entire country...it's a threat to the peace and stability of the nation," read court papers.
Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina has directed that the application be heard tomorrow.
Meanwhile, police have also arrested a female politician for allegedly aiding the MP to stage the abduction.
