  • Latvian Ambassador to Kenya highlighted Kenya's critical role in fostering global partnerships.
  • Ambassador Andris Razans urged Kenyans to explore Latvia's global expertise in key sectors.

The Republic of Latvia is positioning itself as Kenya's strategic partner with ambitious plans to collaborate in the areas of technology, trade and sustainability.

To strengthen bilateral ties, Latvia has identified Kenya as a key partner in promoting digital innovation, sustainable forestry and renewable energy.

The newly appointed Latvian Ambassador to Kenya, Andris Razans, said that by working together, the two nations can transform lives, create jobs and tackle common climate challenges.

"Our shared values and vision for sustainable growth make this partnership a natural fit," the envoy said.

He highlighted Kenya's critical role in fostering global partnerships to improve livelihoods in Africa and Europe.

Mr Razans, who was welcomed to Kenya by President William Ruto, outlined Latvia's readiness to deepen ties with Kenya in areas such as technology, trade, education and sustainability.

"With Kenya's forward-looking foreign policy and Latvia's global expertise, we have a unique opportunity to transform lives, create jobs and tackle common challenges such as climate change," he said.

He urged Kenyans to explore Latvia's global expertise in key sectors and proposed a comprehensive partnership strategy to strengthen ties between the two nations.

The sectors include: digital transformation and innovation, sustainable forest management, trade and economic development, tourism and air connectivity, education and research cooperation, and renewable energy and climate action.

He noted that Latvia's reputation for having the world's fastest internet speeds and a thriving startup ecosystem positions it as a strategic partner for Kenya in advancing digital infrastructure, e-governance and technological innovation.

Kenya's digital economy

Joint ventures in fintech, agritech and e-learning solutions can transform Kenya's digital economy, he said.

He emphasised that his country's expertise in sustainable forestry can guide Kenya in reforestation programmes, sustainable harvesting and the development of bamboo for eco-products.

President Ruto has set a target of planting 15 billion trees by 2032 to increase the country's forest cover from 12 per cent to 30 per cent.

Mr Razans noted that joint efforts can help Kenya balance economic growth with environmental conservation by building industries around timber and bamboo to create jobs and boost trade.

"Expanding bilateral trade can enable Kenya to export its renowned agricultural products - coffee, tea and flowers - while importing Latvia's advanced machinery, technology and wood products.

"Latvia's circular economy model offers new opportunities for Kenya's forestry and furniture industries, supported by public-private partnerships."

During his visit, Ambassador Razans also held discussions with Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) President Dr Erick Ruto, Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) representative Mr Lawrence Njenga and renowned ecopreneur Dr Isaac Kalua Green, Chief Steward of the Green Africa Group.

Dr Kalua Green emphasised the need for sustainable partnerships that prioritise environmental conservation and economic growth.

Mr Razans, who was accompanied by his wife Gunta Razane, called for joint marketing campaigns to promote Kenya's safaris and Latvia's scenic landscapes to increase tourism revenues for both nations.

"Latvia's green technology and expertise in renewable energy offers Kenya opportunities to expand wind, solar and geothermal energy projects while building climate resilience," he said.

Unparalleled opportunities

Ambassador Razans invited Kenyan businesses, government officials and ecopreneurs to visit Latvia, promising unparalleled opportunities in trade, technology and sustainable development.

He reaffirmed Latvia's commitment to fostering a mutually beneficial relationship that uplifts communities in both countries.

"With Kenya's forward-looking foreign policy and Latvia's global expertise, we have a unique opportunity to transform lives, create jobs and tackle common challenges such as climate change. Together, we can achieve a future of sustainable growth," he said.

The visit underlines the growing partnership between the two nations in areas such as trade, education, culture and sustainable development.

Cultural diplomacy was a key highlight of the visit, with the Latvian delegation participating in a special event showcasing Kenya's vibrant traditions and heritage.

This cultural exchange further strengthened the spirit of unity and cooperation between the two nations.

Reflecting on the visit, Ambassador Razans said: "The relationship between Latvia and Kenya is rooted in shared values and mutual respect. This visit represents a significant step forward in our joint journey to create opportunities and build lasting partnerships that will benefit both nations".

During the visit, Ambassador Razans also emphasised the importance of cultural diplomacy, engaging in various arts and heritage projects to celebrate the rich history of both nations.

This included attending a special event showcasing Kenya's vibrant traditions and heritage.

Discussions also focused on exploring trade opportunities to increase exports and investment in sectors such as agriculture, technology and renewable energy, as well as strengthening academic cooperation and student exchange programmes between Kenyan and Latvian institutions.
