On December 17, 2024, the family of Jane Nyabuto received unusual calls from her friends and police.

The callers informed the family that their third-born son, Conrad Nyabuto, had succumbed to injuries after being stabbed 27 times by his estranged girlfriend, Salome Wanjiru, and that the deceased was lying in a pool of blood.

Ms Nyabuto on Thursday told the Nation that the calls first appeared to her as a joke because the callers openly told her that her son had been stabbed 27 times, and incidentally the deceased was 27 years old.

''Initially, I thought it was a bad prank because of the coincidence of the number of knife stabs and his age was strange. I prayed about it… but eventually, it turned out my son was dead,’’ she said.

She explained the scenario in pain and despair and sounded mentally defeated, the very picture she reflected when she was driven to view the body of her son at Kenyatta University Funeral Home.

''My son was butchered using a kitchen knife and the killer wanted him dead. Conrad had been stabbed almost all over. From the chest, stomach, and visibly almost everywhere on the upper body. I hope one day, I will get justice for my son,” she said.

But what really happened on that fateful night?

Mr Nyabuto, who had cleared from the Cooperative University in Karen, Nairobi, in 2020 had visited Ms Wanjiru, with whom he had been having issues, at her house in Kamakis, Ruiru.

His mission was to resolve their differences, but neighbours and their friends say things did not go as planned, leading to a confrontation.

Witnesses said they heard screams and neighbours had to break the door before finding the deceased lying in a pool of blood.

Officers from Gatongora Police Station, who attended to the scene, told the Nation that Mr Nyabuto’s body had multiple injuries and that he was already dead by the time they arrived. The deceased was buried on December 27, 2024, in Kisii County.

After the killing of Nyabuto, Wanjiru was immediately arrested, but rushed to Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital given she had sustained injuries during the confrontation with the deceased.

On Thursday, Ms Wanjiru was escorted from the hospital ward to Thika Law Courts where she was supposed to take a plea but the plan was deferred until Monday after her advocate said she was still unwell.
