Previous supply interruptions
While the supply disruption is due to pending reservoir works, previous disruptions in the city this year were mainly caused by flood damage to pipelines and infrastructure. This was worsened by long-standing issues such as ageing systems, rapid population growth and dependence on few water sources.
Nairobi residents have experienced repeated and frustrating water disruptions, even during periods of heavy rainfall. While this may seem contradictory at first glance, the crisis reveals deeper structural problems in the city’s water system, problems that have only been exacerbated by flooding.
In March, severe flooding swept across parts of the capital as part of the wider 2026 Kenya floods, damaging critical infrastructure. Major water pipelines were washed away or damaged, cutting the supply to entire neighbourhoods for days or even weeks in some cases.
On March 16, Nairobi Water confirmed that the Outering Road pipeline had been fully restored, enabling resumption of supply to the affected areas, including Buruburu Phases 1 and 2, Kariobangi North and South, Dandora, and parts of Mathare and the surrounding estates.
The water company urged residents and businesses in the affected areas to store enough water in advance and to use the available supplies sparingly during the shutdown.
