Two police officers accused of fatally shooting a 20-year-old man under mysterious circumstances on January 11, 2026, in Nairobi’s Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums will spend an additional three days in custody as the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) reviews the case.

Sergeant Godwin Mjomba and Administration Police Constable Patrick Mutunga Titus were remanded after Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Carolyne Nyaguthii was informed that police had not yet completed recording statements from intended witnesses.

“I urge this court to grant detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) three more days to complete the recording of witness statements,” prosecuting counsel Doreen Njoroge requested, saying the matter is of great public interest and that justice must be served.

The suspects did not oppose the extension, allowing investigators additional time to compile the evidence.

The court heard that Shukri Adan Ibrahim Issaka was allegedly shot by the officers without provocation while in the company of two others.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (Ipoa) has called for a thorough probe and prosecution of the officers, describing them as “trigger-happy”.

When the suspects were first arraigned on January 12, 2026, Magistrate Nyaguthii noted that Shukri and his companions had allegedly been forced to lie down before being shot at close range by the police officers.

“The shooting of Shukri sparked widespread protests and destructive demonstrations, with the public demanding immediate justice,” the magistrate observed.

She further noted that the suspects were initially detained for 14 days at Capitol Hill Police Station to allow investigators to compile the investigation diary and committal bundles for the capital offence of murder.

The court also heard that there were initial attempts by police to conceal the incident before Ipoa assumed responsibility for the investigation.

The authority’s lead investigator Abdirahman Jibril told the court that on January 11, 2026, Shukri Adan Ibrahim Issaka, together with Wyclife Nyakwama and Festus Mutinda, was delivering a Toyota Fielder KDN 266B to a Mr Joho at Imara Daima.

During the delivery, the vehicle was allegedly involved in a collision with a matatu. It was at this scene that the two officers intervened and allegedly fired at Shukri, resulting in his death.

The case will be mentioned on January 29, 2026.
