Gachagua attack: Ipoa recommends action against Nyandarua police bosses
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (Ipoa) has recommended disciplinary action against Nyandarua police chiefs for professional misconduct following the recent attack on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Ipoa says its probe into the Shamata chaos has revealed deliberate inaction and negligence on their part.
Security sources investigating the Saturday incident, the second such attack since Mr Gachagua was removed from office, said a policeman from outside Nyandarua arrived at Shamata Stadium, the venue of a prayer meeting, at 11am.
About 20 minutes later, Mr Gachagua arrived, accompanied by a number of his allies. The assailant, who managed to sneak into the public tent with a tear gas canister, waited for the service to end before quickly moving in to disrupt speeches by politicians who had accompanied the former DP.
The suspect, who was sitting in the second row of the public tent, threw the offensive weapon and aimed it at the platform where Mr Gachagua was sitting, after which chaos ensued.
Limuru attack
In a separate incident on November 28, Mr Gachagua was forced to flee a funeral in Limuru after an irate mob stormed the ceremony. His personal vehicle was stoned and the rear window smashed while several mourners suffered injuries.
The former DP had yet to address mourners when the youths struck, first attempting to bring down the tent under which the former DP was seated.
He later accused unnamed persons in government of trying to physically harm him.
