ODM initiates formal process to kick out SG Sifuna
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has summoned the party’s Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna over what it terms as gross misconduct.
The party, in a notice dated April 2, 2026, said its National Executive Committee (NEC) had in a meeting held on February 11, 2026 resolved to initiate proceedings for Sifuna's removal.
The disciplinary proceedings initiated could mark the beginning of the end of the Nairobi senator's tenure in the mammoth party he has steered for close to a decade.
Recently, Mr Sifuna has increasingly diverged from the party’s position, which has largely aligned with the government. At the heart of the contention is the pact between ODM and the ruling party United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the interpretation of the 10-point agenda following the lapse of the March 10 deadline.
The letter, signed by ODM National Chairperson Gladys Wanga, cites multiple charges against the Nairobi Senator, including contradicting official party positions, making inconsistent public statements, and engaging in unsanctioned political activities.
Among the specific accusations, the party claims that during a July 22, 2025 appearance on Citizen TV’s The Explainer, Sifuna declared the ODM–UDA memorandum of understanding “dead” and made remarks that were “inconsistent with resolutions of Party organs, thereby undermining the Party's collective position and authority.”
He is also accused of persistently issuing public statements that contradict party resolutions, including those made after internal meetings in October and November 2025, actions the party says “created confusion and erod[ed] institutional coherence.”
Furthermore, ODM says that Sifuna continued advancing positions at variance with party decisions during a February 3, 2026 appearance on the same TV programme, aggravating internal discord.
The party has also taken issue with what it terms the establishment of “parallel and unsanctioned political initiatives,” accusing Sifuna of participating in activities under the “Linda Mwananchi Initiative” without approval, thereby undermining the party’s unity and strategy.
The Nairobi senator, the party says, has given a wide berth to its key party meetings, including a Central Committee session on January 12, 2026, and NEC meetings held on February 11 and March 4, 2026.
ODM says the cumulative conduct amounts to actions “prejudicial to the interests, discipline, cohesion, and public standing of the Party,” in contravention of its constitution.
Sifuna has been given four days to respond in writing, with a deadline set for April 8, 2026. He is also required to appear before a disciplinary panel on April 10, 2026, for a hearing and determination of the matter.
The development sets the stage for a high-stakes internal showdown within ODM, with potential implications for the party’s leadership and cohesion given that some of the party members have vowed to quit the party should Mr Sifuna be ousted.
“Take further notice that should you fail to respond within the stipulated period, the Party shall proceed to determine the matter in accordance with the ODM party constitution, and take such action, as it deems appropriate,” the letter states.
