ODM, UDA summon Nairobi MCAs to talks over Sakaja’s ouster

The Kenya Kwanza Alliance and the Azimio la Umoja coalition have summoned Nairobi's Members of County Assembly (MCAs) in an apparent attempt to prevent the imminent impeachment of Governor Johnson Sakaja and his deputy, James Muchiri.
MCAs from both coalitions have confirmed that they have been invited to separate meetings, which are scheduled to take place on Tuesday at different locations.
According to some ODM members — whose party holds the majority in the Assembly — they have been invited to a meeting at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation (JOOF). ODM party leader Raila Odinga is expected to chair the session.
“Good morning, Hon. Members. You are hereby invited by the Party Leader, H.E. Raila Amollo Odinga, to a consultative meeting at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation (JOOF) today, 2 September 2025, starting at 10 a.m.,” read a message sent to ODM members.
Those who spoke to Daily Nation indicated that they were not privy to the agenda but suspected the impeachment motion could be on the table.
“It’s true, we have been invited to JOOF. We don’t know what will come out of it, but I guess they want us to drop this impeachment motion, which is members-driven,” said Mountain View MCA Maurice Ochieng.
At the same time, members of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) confirmed that they had been invited to a separate meeting at State House.
“Greetings everyone. We will be meeting our party leader tentatively at 12:30 p.m. today at State House. Kindly plan accordingly. We will give you further details,” read a message sent to Kenya Kwanza members.
These parallel meetings come just a day after Mr Odinga held closed-door sessions with the Assembly leadership, which were also attended by Governor Sakaja. However, the outcome of these meetings is still unknown, as those present have declined to speak publicly.
As of Monday, MCAs maintained their stance that Sakaja’s administration had failed to deliver on its promises to Nairobi residents.
By Monday, they had collected 87 signatures in support of the impeachment motion, with a target of 100.
The governor has been accused of failing to curb corruption at City Hall since taking office. He is also alleged to have facilitated corruption through his office, delayed payments to contractors and failed to release Ward Development Funds (WDF) in a timely manner.
