Barely two years after publicly admitting that the office of Senate Deputy Minority Whip came with privileges he considered excessive, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has now lost the very position that accorded him those benefits.
On Thursday, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi formally announced Mr Sifuna's removal as Deputy Minority Whip after receiving communication from Senate Minority Leader Stewart Madzayo that Migori Senator Eddy Oketch had been elected to replace him.
The decision marks yet another dramatic setback for the outspoken Nairobi Senator, coming only days after he was removed from the Senate Energy Committee and after losing his position as Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General.

Although Mr Sifuna remains the elected Senator for Nairobi and retains all constitutional powers attached to that office, his removal from the Senate leadership strips him of one of the most influential positions available to opposition legislators, together with the administrative support, privileges and institutional influence that accompany it.
Ironically, Mr Sifuna himself had offered Kenyans a rare glimpse into those privileges during debate in the Senate in July 2024 while urging Parliament to reduce public expenditure.
"I want to give a personal example," he told the House. "When I became the Deputy Minority Whip, I was allocated a GK (Government of Kenya) vehicle."
He then disclosed how surprised he was by the amount of money loaded onto the vehicle's Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) card for use on the Nairobi Expressway.
"I was shocked at the amount of money that is on my ETC card... As of this morning there is Sh377,000 on the ETC of the vehicle that has been given by Parliament. It does not make sense. I honestly do not need all that money," he said then.
At the time, Mr Sifuna argued Parliament could significantly cut expenditure without affecting its operations.
Today, that government vehicle, together with the extensive facilitation attached to the office, is no longer available to him.
As Deputy Minority Whip, the Nairobi Senator was entitled to a government vehicle of up to 3,000cc maintained by taxpayers, complete with unlimited official fuel and Expressway facilitation.
The office also came with a monthly responsibility allowance of about Sh250,000 paid by the Parliamentary Service Commission over and above the remuneration earned by senators.
Beyond the financial benefits, the position provided a fully facilitated office supported by a team of about six Parliamentary Service Commission employees, including a driver, personal assistant, secretary, research officer and office assistants.
Those officers, employed on contract terms linked to the office, also enjoyed medical cover provided by Parliament.
Their contracts and benefits are directly tied to the holder of the leadership position, meaning they stand to lose those privileges immediately following the office holder's removal.
Sources familiar with parliamentary administration said the staff attached to Mr Sifuna's office are expected to leave following his ouster.
The Deputy Minority Whip is part of the Senate Minority leadership, working alongside the Minority Leader, Deputy Minority Leader and Minority Whip in coordinating opposition business inside the House.

The office plays a central role in mobilising senators during key votes, maintaining party discipline, coordinating attendance, negotiating House business and implementing the coalition's legislative strategy.
With his removal, Mr Sifuna loses his formal place at the table where many of the opposition's parliamentary decisions are made.
He also forfeits the institutional leverage that comes with participating in negotiations involving committee assignments, scheduling of debates and legislative priorities and enhanced time in the floor of the House.
For a politician who had built his profile partly through Parliament, the loss significantly diminishes his influence within the Senate.
Only months ago, Mr Sifuna simultaneously served as ODM Secretary-General and Senate Deputy Minority Whip, making him one of the party's most powerful figures both inside and outside Parliament.
His removal as ODM Secretary-General was followed by his ejection from the influential Senate Energy Committee chaired by ODM leader Dr Oburu Oginga.
Unlike other senators affected by the committee reshuffle, Mr Sifuna was not reassigned to another committee, reducing his role in parliamentary oversight.
The latest decision followed a chaotic late-night Parliamentary Group meeting on Wednesday that exposed deep divisions within the opposition.
While senators allied to the broad-based cooperation between ODM and President William Ruto backed his removal, Mr Sifuna's allies questioned both the legality of the meeting and the process used to replace him.
Supporters argued the meeting had been convened on short notice without indicating leadership changes on the agenda, while others linked the move to a luncheon attended earlier in the day by a section of ODM senators at State House.
Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda, who moved the motion to remove Mr Sifuna, insisted the decision was purely political.
"It was basically about Tutam versus Wantam," he said.
Responding to his removal, Mr Sifuna thanked the Minority leadership and senators for their support during his tenure.
"I thank the leadership and members for the cooperation they have given me during my time as the Deputy Senate Minority Whip. I congratulate my young brother, Senator Eddy Oketch, on his new role," Mr Sifuna said.
The change from the Azimio coalition took immediate effect, with Mr Oketch assuming the position of Deputy Senate Minority Whip.
Despite the setback, Mr Sifuna remains the Senator for Nairobi and continues to enjoy all constitutional functions of that office, including participating in debates, introducing Bills, representing Nairobi County, scrutinising legislation and serving on parliamentary committees to which he may be appointed.
He has, however, lost the leadership platform that amplified his influence, gave him access to parliamentary decision-making and provided substantial institutional support.
