Six weeks after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced the departure of its chief executive officer, Marjan Hussein Marjan, the United Opposition, which had demanded his sacking a week earlier, says it is not yet done with the agency.

The United Opposition has revisited the electoral reforms agenda, with renewed calls on the IEBC to ditch electoral management company Smartmatic ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, his Democracy Action Party–Kenya (DAP-K) counterpart Eugene Wamalwa, and Democratic Party (DP) leader Justin Muturi say the integrity of the 2027 General Election is at stake if Smartmatic manages the election.

“IEBC must completely sever ties with Smartmatic. Any continued engagement with Smartmatic signals a compromised election,” Mr Musyoka said.

“As the United Opposition, we have been to the IEBC offices. We have told them the country will land in trouble unless there is a clear roadmap ahead of next year’s General Election,” Mr Wamalwa said.

They spoke at Kavete Township in Makueni County on Friday during the burial of Michael Wambua, the father of Makueni-nominated MCA Urbanus Wambua.

Governors Mutula Kilonzo Jr (Makueni) and Wavinya Ndeti (Machakos), senators Daniel Maanzo (Makueni) and Enoch Wambua (Kitui), and MPs Rose Museo (Makueni), Thaddeus Nzambia (Kilome), and Musili Mawathe (Embakasi South) are among the leaders who graced the funeral.

Mr Musyoka led calls for Kenyans to reject President William Ruto at the ballot, accusing him of misrule.

At the same time, Mr Musyoka, Mr Muturi, and Mr Wamalwa called on Chief Justice Martha Koome to expedite all pending election-related matters, especially those revolving around the procurement of electoral materials.

“We cannot go into the 2027 General Election with discredited technology at the level of Smartmatic,” Mr Muturi said.
