Kenyans will now mark the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution every August 27 after President William Ruto declared the day 'Katiba Day', 15 years since the new supreme law came into force.
In his latest presidential proclamation, the Head of State announced that, beginning August 27, 2025, the day will be set aside to commemorate the 2010 Constitution.
The President said Katiba Day will be observed across the country and in all of Kenya’s diplomatic missions abroad as a moment to renew the nation’s shared commitment to constitutional ideals.
He explained that the day will foster national dialogue on constitutionalism, governance and the rule of law.
Although Katiba Day will remain a working day, the President directed all government institutions across the three arms of government, the two levels of governance and schools to take part in civic engagement.
Such engagements will include organising and participating in solemn activities that promote constitutional awareness.
“August 27, 2025, and every 27th day of August thereafter shall be observed as Katiba Day in commemoration of the promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010,” President Ruto declared.
“It is befitting for the people of Kenya to commemorate this day as a reminder of our collective duty to obey, preserve, protect, and implement the Constitution,” he added.
The 2010 Constitution was promulgated on August 27, 2010, marking a defining moment in Kenya’s history.
The new dispensation ushered in citizen-centred governance, devolution, equitable development, protection of fundamental rights and freedoms, and a shared aspiration for a just, equitable, and prosperous nation.
“The 27th of August 2025 marks the fifteenth anniversary of the promulgation of the 2010 supreme law, presenting a unique opportunity to celebrate our Constitution, which is universally acclaimed as one of the most transformative and progressive in human history,” said Dr Ruto.
