Kapenguria mayor Andrew Rotino has asked the government to put up a monument in honour of the ‘Kapenguria Six’ freedom heroes in Pokot.

He said after Mashujaa Day celebrations at Makutano Stadium that the gesture would go a long way in preserving the history of Kenya’s struggle for independence.

The heroes detained in Kapenguria were founder President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, Achieng’ Oneko, Paul Ngei, Bildad Kaggia, Kung’u Karumba and Fred Kubai.

The mayor said that although the independence heroes were tried and jailed in the region, there was little on the ground to show this for the benefit of future generations.

Mr Rotino further said that the government should set up a modern school and a university in the region in remembrance of the heroes who played a big role in the struggle.
