ODM leader Raila Odinga has spoken against politics of discrimination, warning that it risks tearing apart the country’s social fabric.
While addressing a congregation at St John’s ACK Church Mwimuto in Kabete, Kiambu County on Sunday, Mr Odinga also condemned sentiments by Meru Senator Mithika Linturi during a political rally in Eldoret on Saturday.
During the rally, which was also attended by Deputy President William Ruto, the Senator described those opposed to Dr Ruto’s presidential bid as ‘madoadoa’ (stains) whom he said must be ejected.
But Mr Odinga termed Linturi's sentiments as discriminatory and inflammatory.
“We cannot continue profiling people as 'kwe kwe' (weeds) and 'madoadoa. We cannot afford to go back where we came from,” Mr Odinga said.
“Let everybody be allowed to live and do business in any part of the country without discrimination based on tribe, colour, religion, gender or age. Every Kenyan allowed to live in any part of the country without seeking for permission from anybody,” Mr Odinga said.
The ODM leader pointed out that Kenyans desire a country where everybody is free to live anywhere and do business without fear.
“Our constitution did not come easily. It was as a result sacrifice and we cannot let its gains be eroded just like that. We must say no to such statements and retrogressive actions in our midst,” he went on.
“I also heard some talk ill against members of the Asian community. Asians, Arabs are all Kenyans and we must embrace all,” he said.
The ODM leader further said said the country cannot afford to have more Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) as was occasioned by the 2007-08 post-election violence (PEV).
He pledged to have those were displaced by 2007-08 PEV resettled if he is elected the president in the August General Election.
