Ruto confers Aga Khan family members with the Order of the Golden Heart

President William Ruto has conferred two members of the Aga Khan family with the prestigious Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya for the increased involvement in development in the sectors of health, education and infrastructure.

His Highness Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan V, the 50th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, has been conferred with the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (C.G.H.), the highest civilian honor in Kenya.

Princess Zahra Aga Khan was honoured with the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (E.G.H.).

“In recognition of distinguished and outstanding services rendered to the nation in various capacities and responsibilities, I, William Samoei Ruto, confer Awards and Honours to the following persons, The Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya, The First Class: Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (C.G.H.) His Highness Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan V, The Second Class: Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (E.G.H.) Princess Zahra Aga Khan,” reads a Gazette notice dated February 28.

His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan V became the spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili community on February 4, 2025, after the death of his father, Prince Karim Aga Khan IV. 

According to the National Honours Act 2013, a person shall merit the conferment of a national honour if that person “has made an exemplary contribution to the country or a county in the economic, social, scientific, academic, public administration, governance, sports, journalism, business, security or other fields”, or when he “has otherwise brought honour, glory or pride to the Republic.”

The Aga Khan is celebrated across the world due to his unwavering commitment to improving lives through education, healthcare, economic development, and the promotion of pluralism and knowledge.

Though the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), he has advanced projects that address social, economic and cultural needs. This is through modernising healthcare in developing nations and establishment of world-class universities and preservation of cultural heritage.
