President Ruto nominates Issack Hassan for Ipoa chairperson
Former electoral commission chairman Ahmed Issack Hassan and ex-MPs Rehema Jaldesa and Charles Njagua Kanyi are among individuals who have landed plum state jobs.
President William Ruto on Tuesday nominated Mr Hassan – former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman – to chair the Board of Independent Policing Oversight Authority (Ipoa). Ipoa is a civilian body mandated to oversight the work of the police.
Also nominated to serve on the board as members are Ms Ann Mwangi, Dr Micah Nyakego, Mr Boniface Samati, Dr Annette Mbogoh, Mr John Nyaga, Mr Kenwilliams Nyakomitah and Ms Jackline Mwenesi.
Mr Hassan, who is an advocate of the High Court, served as IEBC chair between November 2011 to October 2016. Previously, he served as the chairperson of the Interim Independence Electoral Commission (IIEC) between 2009 and 2011.
He has also served as a commissioner in the constitution of Kenya Review Commission. He has in the recent past unsuccessfully applied to serve as a High Court Judge as well as in the Court of Appeal.
The President has also nominated Mr Sammy Chepkwony to serve as the chairperson of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC). The President described Mr Chepkwony as an accomplished human resource professional with over 30 years of experience.
The nominee is currently the managing director and chief officer at People Centric Management Limited. He previously worked as a senior consultant at PriceWaterHouseCoopers (PWC) Kenya.
He has also held senior positions, including Human Resources Director at Kenya Airways Ltd, James Finlay Kenya Ltd as well as Human Resource Manager at Nairobi Bottlers Ltd. He has also served as Regional Human Resource Director at Aga Khan University.
Various interest groups
Mr Chepkwony has been nominated alongside six others, who will be representing various interest groups as members. They include Maj. Gen (Rtd) Martin Kizito, a nominee of the Defence Council, Mr Mohamed Abdi, nominee of the Senate on behalf of the County Governments, Ms Jane Njage, nominee of the Teachers Service Commission and Mr Leonid Ashindu, nominee of the Association of Professional Societies in East Africa (APSEA).
Others are Dr Gilda Odera, nominee of the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) AND Dr Geoffrey Omondi, nominee of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu).
The nominees will be succeeding the Lyn Mengich-led team that exited office last month.
Dr Ruto further nominated Mr Charles Dulo to chair the Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ). Mr Dulo is an advocate of the High Court and was among the founding members of Daystar University’s School of Law, where he served as a lecturer.
Mr Kanyi, former Starehe MP and Ms Dorothy Jemator Kimengech have been nominated to serve as members.
Ms Jaldesa, former Isiolo Woman Rep, has been nominated to serve as the chairperson of the National Gender and Equality Commission. Before her election to Parliament, Ms Jaldesa served as the Chairperson of the Kenya Industrial Estates Board and Ewaso Ng’iro North Development Authority Board and a member of Kenya Seed Company.
The President has also nominated Mr Gerald Arita to serve as Deputy Governor at the Central Bank of Kenya. The nominee is a career central banker with 36 years of professional experience.
He has previously served as Director, Financial Markets Development, Director, Banking Services, Director Bank Supervision Department among other senior roles at CBK.
