Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi was assaulted at a Kisumu City coffee house Wednesday by group of rowdy youth, his aide said; the lawmaker was then treated at a local hospital for injuries.
According to Derick Luvega, Osotsi's Director of Communications, the Vihiga Senator was assaulted by a group of armed men.
The legislator had made a routine visit to Westend Mall to get a shave before going to Java Restaurant, where he met a friend and chatted with members of the public for about thirty minutes.
During this time, a group of armed individuals confronted him, questioning his political stance and subsequently physically assaulting him.
They demanded to know why he was against President William Ruto’s re-election, the aide told Nation.
"The Senator's security detail exercised restraint to avoid discharging firearms in a public setting, which could have resulted in grave harm to innocent civilians," said Luvega.
He called upon the National Police Service to act with urgency and thoroughness in investigating this incident.
"The availability of CCTV surveillance at Java Restaurant provides a critical starting point for identifying and apprehending those responsible. The rule of law must prevail and those behind this heinous act must be held accountable," said Luvega in a statement.
