Talk of town: Leaders worried after Ruto, Moi deal
President William Ruto and Kanu chairman Gideon Moi after a meeting at State House, Nairobi, on Thursday.
Anxiety has gripped top officials from a region after the rapprochement between President William Ruto and Gideon Moi was consummated on Friday. One of the top officials was heard confiding in a friend on Friday that they know that ultimately some of them will have to pave the way to accommodate Kanu men and women, and that the lingering question is who will be affected and when. According to our bird, the top official was worried, saying they are now seen to have less political capital with the president after a former government official led the region into a rebellion against the president after he was replaced.
CS pact with administrator hits dead end
A Cabinet Secretary and a senior State official heading a government arm appear to have disagreed politically even before their under-the-table, nascent engagement could blossom. The two have been meeting secretly to form an alliance to negotiate for a running mate position in 2027. Having both suffered political dents in the recent past, each now believes he should be president — by 2032, or so they think. Both are the same age and separately agree that President Ruto is unbeatable in 2027. Come 2032, they will both be in their late 70s. So, who should help whom to get what?
Senator irks State House operative
A senator who once occupied a top county seat found himself in a near shouting match with a senior State House official during a heated debate over the 2027 polls. The discussion, which started as a harmless exchange about power sharing, quickly turned into a full-blown lecture from the senator — complete with history lessons on how his community has been marginalised since independence and why it was now their turn to get the coveted Senate Speaker’s seat after 2027. What appeared to grind the official’s gears was the senator’s unwavering insistence. The State House official was dumbfounded, clearly unimpressed by the senator’s tone, which had shifted from persuasive to mildly threatening.
Commissioner living on borrowed time
The newfound relationship between a commissioner in one of the country’s most lucrative commissions and opposition leaders may soon cost him his plush seat. The man, perhaps carried away by the excitement of political camaraderie — or a good selfie angle — recently posted a photo with a prominent opposition figure. Now, whispers have turned into full-blown lobbying, with eager hopefuls already circling the seat like vultures over a wounded buffalo. Though the commissioner has not publicly declared allegiance to the opposition, insiders say it’s only a matter of time before his silence speaks louder than words — and his exit letter writes itself.
Prominent lawyer faces arrest
A top lawyer has been left with egg on the face after the tricks of obtaining money from accused persons in exchange for the dropping of defilement charges hit a dead end. The learned friend, for the past few years, has perfected the art of pretending to hold brief for victims of defilement, only to secretly meet those accused of the act. On the sidelines, the lawyer would meet underage girls to recant their witness statements so that the accused could walk scot-free while victims endured the pain — and no justice. But the lawyer is now staring at exposure after an international human rights body intervened, which could lead to deregistration and arrest.
Join the opposition if you want, MP told
An MP eyeing a gubernatorial seat who met a top opposition leader critical of the government, in the belief that his action would trigger calls by powerful forces for a truce between him and another politician from the region who holds a position in an influential political party, is in shock. The lawmaker was told in no uncertain terms that he could go ahead and join the government critics if he so wished. So embarrassed was the politician that he is now said to be considering decamping officially to the opposition and launching his bid for the gubernatorial position currently held by another politician who holds a top position in a political party.
