Former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju has said his driver was arrested on Tuesday and detained without being presented in court today.

Speaking to journalists outside Dari Business Park in Karen, where the police still camp by the gate, Tuju claimed his aide Steve Mwanga was “waylaid” by police before being taken into custody and held at Langata Police Station.

“My prayers are with Mwanga. He was arrested yesterday. He was driving and they waylaid him. I had sent him to Upper Hill to deliver a parcel there,” Tuju said.

Police had neither issued an official statement on the matter. When asked if Mwanga had been held at Langata Polce Station, Nairobi Regional Commander Issa Mohamud said he was not aware of the matter.

Tuju says his legal team has already moved to court to challenge the detention and secure his release.

“We have gone to court and we hope to secure his release before the end of the day,” he said.

The arrest of Mwanga according to Tuju, is meant “to intimidate and terrorise him.”

“He was down with pneumonia a few days ago and he has not yet recovered,” he added.

Mounting woes

The arrest adds to the mounting woes facing the former CS. His Dari business property has been under police guard as he claimed that it has been forcibly taken from him. The property is at the centre of a long-running legal dispute between Tuju and the East African Development Bank over a Sh2.2 billion loan secured in 2015.

Recently, Tuju was reported missing before emerging from his Karen residence two days later. He claimed he had to go into hiding after realizing that a vehicle that was trailing him. The police, however, have since said he was at his Karen residence the entire time he was allegedly missing.

“There was a vehicle which trailed me on the night of March 21, 2026. The vehicle did not have a plate number,” said Tuju last week, adding that this information was shared with police in writing when they arrested him upon his emergence.

“In the fullness of time, Kenyans will know the truth. And some of the police officers acting with impunity should know there is a term that applies to all of us. Former CS, former President, former DCI director…You will be held to account,” Tuju said today.
