Deaflympics: Clean sweep for Kenya in men’s 5,000m

The Kenyan men's team in 5,000m at the ongoing Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics on Monday lived up to the expectation as they swept the all the podium places in thrilling final.

Ian Wambui clinched the gold medal as he led James Musembi and Nelson Kipkorir to 1-2-3 Kenyan finish.

It was double joy for Wambui as he also shattered both the world and Deaflympics record with a remarkable time of 13 minutes and 52.83 seconds.

The previous world and Deaflympics record of 14:02.90 was set by Symon Kibai when he won the men’s 5,000m title at the 2013 Games in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Musembi claimed silver medal after clocking 14:15.28 while Kipkorir took the bronze medal in 14:43. 35.

Earlier, Kenyan Viola Jelimo scooped bronze medal in the women’s 5,000m race with a time of 17:26.83.

Portugal’s Mira Dasilva won gold medal in 17:26.23 ahead of independent athlete Luliia Emilyevna who timed 17:26.8.

Kenya has now won five gold, five silver and four bronze for a tally of 14 medals. Wambui has two gold medal, having also won the men’s 10,000m.
