When Diana Wanza lines up at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, she will be doing more than just competing for medals. She will also be carrying with her a remarkable story of sacrifice and determination.
From the dusty fields of Machakos County to the international athletics stage, her journey has been characterised by hard work.
Born in Machakos, she began her education at Mbusyani Primary School, where she first discovered her passion for athletics. She had enjoyed running from a young age, but it was during her secondary school years that she began to take the sport more seriously.
After completing her KCPE exams in 2013, she enrolled at Kiatineni Secondary School, later transferring to Ngoleni Secondary School, where she took her KCSE exams in 2018. It was at Ngoleni that her athletic talent flourished. Wanza said that she received a lot of support from her family and teachers. This helped her talent to flourish even more.
"The school really supported us as we worked to build our careers as athletes. Our principal, Daniel Munguti, was passionate about athletics. He encouraged all those who were passionate about athletics to pursue their talents. That support gave me confidence. I am happy to be the African 10,000 metre champion,” said Wanza.
Her passion for athletics continued when she joined Kenyatta University in 2019 to study for a Bachelor of Education degree in Library Science. However, it was not easy, as the university had no structured athletics programme or coach, and offered very little support.
“As athletes, we had to fend for ourselves on campus. But that didn't discourage me. I was patient and continued working hard,” she said.

Balancing academics and athletics was challenging for Wanza. Nevertheless, she remained focused and, in 2023, she graduated, marking another key milestone in her life. She later dedicated herself fully to professional running.
After university, she moved to Ngong in Kajiado County, where she enjoyed high-altitude training. Those initial months were tough, but they paved the way for her to break through to the international stage. She credits much of her progress to a German friend named Anne, who believed in her potential and supported her.
"I'm grateful to my German friend Anne. She helped me build a strong foundation in my athletic journey. She supported me financially and emotionally,” she added.
Wanza is also grateful to her family, whose support has kept her moving.
“Without my family, I would be nothing. They have always supported me. I'm also thankful to my coach and training partners for believing in me,” said Wanza. She is coached by Idris Hamud, a UK-based tactician who also manages her under Moja Sports Management. Under Hamud’s guidance, Wanza has grown into one of Kenya's most promising distance runners.
She also draws inspiration from Hellen Obiri, one of Kenya's greatest athletes and the New York Marathon champion. “I truly admire how Hellen Obiri tackles her races. She's such a great athlete and I look up to her. Her achievements motivate me to keep working hard,” said Wanza.
Away from the track, Wanza is a devoted family woman. But she admits that combining athletics with family responsibilities is not easy.

"I have a family. Balancing everything isn't easy, but my family is very supportive. They understand the sacrifices we have to make today for a better tomorrow,” she said.
Her daily training routine varies depending on the programme. Some days she wakes up between 5:00 am and 5:30 am to train. She also goes for a light recovery jog in the evening.
She begins her day at around 6:30 am during speed and workout sessions, following training plans that have been carefully structured by her coach.
The defining moment of her career came in May last year, when she qualified for the African Championships.
Competing in Ghana, she delivered an outstanding performance to win the gold medal — an achievement she describes as life-changing.
"Qualifying for the African Championships really inspired me. Going to Ghana and winning gold in the 10,000 metres opened many doors for me. I'm heading to Glasgow full of confidence, and with God's grace, I know I'm going to do well,” she said.
Her long-term ambitions include earning a place in Team Kenya for next year's World Championships in Beijing, China. She is also looking forward to competing at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
