Emmanuel Wanyonyi breaks 27-year-old 1000m record

Reigning Olympics and world 800m champion, Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya, on Friday broke the world record in 1000m in Monaco Diamond League meeting.
Running only his first race over the distance, Wanyonyi won the race in 2 minutes, 11.83 seconds, lowering the record previously held by his compatriot Noah Ngeny by 0.13 seconds.
Wanyonyi, 21, won in Monaco ahead of 2022 World Athletics Championships 1,500m gold medalist, Jake Wightman from Britain who timed 2:12.77 to move to fifth on the world all-time list.

The 2024 Olympics 800m bronze medalist, Djamel Sedjati from Algeria, came third in 2:13.94. All the top six runners in Friday’s 1000m race dipped under 2:15.
Ngeny set the old record of 2:11:83 in Rieti on September5, 1999 after lowering Sebastian Coe’s record of 2:12:18 which the Briton had set in Oslo on July 11, 1981.
Ngeny's record stood for 27 years.
The Monaco Diamond League held on Friday was the 10th competition in the series. The next meeting, the London Diamond League, will take place on July 18 at the Olympic Stadium.
