He might not be holding any world title or any major crown but George “The King” Onyango already sees himself as world champion and one who will be a force to reckon with in future.
The bout is one of 10 fights organised by South African promoter Kalakoda Promotion. The fights will start at 7:30pm, and will be live on NTV.
Today, the 28-year-old orthodox boxer faces the tough task of actualising those dreams when he comes up against big-talking Tanzanian Benjamin 'The Stone' Mchunguzi to contest for East and Central Africa super welterweight title bout at Mass House in Nairobi.
Winning today’s bout will open doors for him to gun for Commonwealth Boxing Council (CBC) and International Boxing Organisation (IBO) world titles.
“I know I’m already a world champion but I must bring out that beast in me for the world to see. The bout will show my standards,” Onyango said, vowing to floor Mchunguzi in the 10-round contest.
The former national lightweight champion, who has a record of 21 bouts - 16 wins, three loses and a draw (16-3-1) - is banking on solid training that includes a three-month camp he attended, to stop Mchunguzi in Nairobi tonight.
It will be Onyango’s second title fight, having beaten Augustine Wafula to win the national lightweight title back in 2019. Onyango successfully defended the national title against Fred Nyakesha in 2021 before vacating it.
“I have worked all-round on my stamina, strength, conditioning and speed,” said Onyango, who will be facing a third consecutive opponent from Tanzania in one year.

Tonight’s fights, organised by Kalakoda Promotion and sanctioned by Kenya Professional Boxing Council, have been dubbed ‘Nightmare in Nairobi IV.’
Onyango outclassed Bariki Solomoni Aibon and Ernest Kapinga on unanimous points decisions on November 21, last year and on February 27, this year respectively.
“Mchunguzi is a worthy opponent. He has been talking a lot but I will silence him. He will be lucky to last till midway through the fight. I won’t say he is better than the Tanzanians I have met before, but I will make him look ordinary,” said Onyango.
Mchunguzi, who has a 5-2-0 record, has vowed to make light work of Onyango and end his dream of contesting the CBC or IBO titles. Mchunguzi took a swipe at Onyango yesterday, claiming that the Kenyan boxer has only fought and overcome ill-prepared opponents from Tanzania before and should expect a rude shock today.
Onyango, who turned professional nine years ago, was introduced to boxing by renowned female boxer Conjestina 'Hands of Stone' Achieng back in Umoja in 2015.
Onyango revealed that a disagreement between him and Conjestina’s son Charltone Otieno resulted in a fight, which led him to pursuing boxing.
“We beat the hell out of each other and Conjestina was so impressed that I had taken on Charltone with ease. She told me that I had potential in boxing. From henceforth, Conjestina would invite me to her gymnasium in Umoja. We were expected to pay Sh20 to train at the facility, but she invited me to use it free of charge,” Onyango remembers.
In some of the seven support bouts, Olympian Elizabeth Andiego will slug it out with Tanzania’s Nelusigwe Mdemu in four-round non title women’s super middleweight bout.
Kenya’s Martin “Tiger” Acheb will fight Uganda’s Mubarak “General Sensa” Sseguya in a six-round welterweight bout.
