The death of Harambee Stars and Gor Mahia legend, Allan Thigo, on Saturday marked the end of a remarkable journey for a man who redefined brilliance, loyalty on the pitch, and dominated the midfield role for Kenya and his club Gor Mahia in the 1970s and 1980s.
Because of his exceptional skills on the ball, passion and unmatched commitment to the game, he went by many nicknames, including “90-minute man”, “the midfield general”, Ogango, and “Wuon pap” (owner of the field). He leaves behind a rich football legacy in the hearts of local fans.
His wife, Dorcas Simiyu, said his condition had deteriorated on Saturday, May 9 2026. An ambulance had been called to rush him to hospital, but he died at home.
“He passed away some 30 minutes ago,” Ms Simiyu told Nation Sport on phone on Saturday.
The local football fraternity has paid glowing tribute to the man regarded as the greatest attacking midfielder of his generation, many recalling his exceptional talent and immense contribution to the game. Thigo donned the prestigious national team colours for 13 consecutive years. He was part of the Harambee Stars squad that took Kenya to the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in 1972, when Cameroon hosted the championship. Kenya finished fifth in the eight-team tournament after failing to go past the group stage.

At club level with Kenyan giants Gor, Thigo enjoyed a remarkable 12-season spell between 1970 and 1981, scoring 88 goals for the club. Only the late Sammy Onyango, with 93, scored more goals for K’Ogalo than him. At the age of 26, Thigo had earned immense respect from his teammates at the club, becoming a player-cum-coach. He guided Gor to the local league title, unbeaten in 1976.
Thigo held the same position in 1979 when the Kenyan giants also lifted the league. Still, as a player-cum-coach, the talented midfielder played a key role in K’Ogalo’s qualification for the final of the 1979 Africa Cup Winners Cup (now CAF Confederation Cup), where they lost 8-0 in the final to Cameroon’s Canon Yaounde.
On their way to the final, Thigo orchestrated one of the finest midfield displays ever by a Kenyan team. He was central to Gor’s elimination of defending champions Horoya from Guinea in the semi-final stage, winning 1-0 in Nairobi and 2-0 in Conakry.
“He was out of this world,” James Goro Oronge, who was Thigo’s teammate at Gor, said.
All Thigo’s nicknames came from the way he played on the pitch. He was called the “90-minute man” because he played tirelessly throughout the duration of matches and was rarely substituted.
The nickname “midfield general” reflected his commanding presence and his ability to dictate play from midfield. The late Thigo was inducted into the Kenya Football Hall of Fame in December 2017. Founded in 2013 by US-based Jared Origi, the Kenya Football Hall of Fame is a private non-profit-making organisation which celebrates distinguished former international players. Harambee Stars and AFC Leopards legend, the late Joe Kadenge, was its first inductee.
Thigo started his football journey at Kisumu Hotstars, where he became one of the club’s greatest products. He had joined Hotstars as a young midfielder and quickly became the heartbeat of the team with his calmness on the ball, vision and leadership.

Hotstars, under player-coach Peter Oronge, had assembled a strong squad which played a huge role in nurturing young talent in Kisumu. The team included towering defender Alex Oguda, popularly nicknamed “Longman”, goalkeeper Francis Oloo “Katembo”, Benson Oballa, John Chore and several other talented players. “Hotstars was like an academy for Gor Mahia,” recalled Kisumu football enthusiast Philip Ooyo, adding that the club became a direct pathway for talented footballers from Kisumu to join established Kenyan giants.
“Before Gor Mahia signed Thigo, everybody already knew him through Hotstars. The club shaped many players before bigger teams came for them,” he said. After hanging his boots, Thigo transitioned to coaching. He coached Gor for 10 months in 2008. Gor eulogised him as a player who contributed immensely to the club’s success.
“…His contribution to Kenyan football and Gor Mahia family will always be remembered. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, teammates and fans during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace. Rest In Peace, legend,” Gor on its social media pages.
The club’s patron, Eliud Owalo, stated that Kenyan football was poorer without Thigo. “…Kenyan soccer has lost the greatest attacking midfielder of his generation, known for beauty, flow, entertainment - connecting players and fans and orchestrating the finest midfield play ever displayed by a Kenyan soccer team,” said Owalo.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said: “The passing of Allan Thigo is a painful loss to Kenyan football and to all who grew up inspired by his brilliance and leadership on and off the pitch. As the heartbeat of Gor Mahia for over a decade and a proud servant of the Harambee Stars, Thigo was a midfielder of unmatched elegance and unwavering commitment. A true sportsman whose legacy stretches far beyond the game.”
