What you need to know:

  • Newton Ochieng’s 88th minute strike from the spot was enough for Bidco to take all three points.
  • The match was marred by crowd trouble forcing police to lob teargas canisters to disperse unruly fans.

Ghanaian Charles Akonnor began his tenure as Gor Mahia coach on a disappointing note as Bidco United stunned the 21-time record champions 1-0 in a SportPesa League match on Sunday.

Substitute Newton Ochieng’s 88th minute strike from the spot was enough for Bidco to take all three points as K’Ogalo paid the price for their wastefulness at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

It is only the second time in 11 meetings that Bidco have beaten K’Ogalo. In their previous 10 meetings since March 2021, Gor Mahia had won five times while the other four ended in draws. Last season, Bidco defeated Gor by a similar margin in the first leg of the fixture.

The match was marred by crowd trouble forcing the police to lob teargas canisters to disperse a section of the unruly fans.

Gor Mahia’s newly signed Ghanaian player Ebenezer Adukuwaw was a constant threat on the left wing during the first-half but none of his dangerous crosses yielded fruits. On the other end of the pitch, Bidco came close through Collins Akite and Victor Kunjili.

Gor started the second half strongly but were foiled by Bidco’s goalkeeper Issa Emuria. The goalkeeper denied midfielder Alpha Odhiambo twice in the early stages of the second period.

K’Ogalo’s best scoring chance came in the 65th minute when captain Austine Odhiambo received the ball inside the box but he was dispossessed, with his penalty appeal falling on deaf ears.

Moments later, Odhiambo came close again, his left-footed shot narrowly missing the target. Earlier on in the 64th minute, Kunjili tested Gor’s goalkeeper Gad Mathews with a volley.

Then two minutes from time, Ochieng struck the match winner for Bidco from the spot following a foul inside the box.
