Chan 2024: Here is a list of major Nairobi roads to be closed from Sunday
A police officer controls traffic along Mombasa Road at the Bunyala roundabout. Madaraka roundabout to Bunyala roundabout is one of the sections to be closed during Chan games.
Police have announced road closures and diversions ahead of the African Nations Championship (Chan) tournament in Nairobi, urging motorists to prepare for major traffic changes. The Chan tournament is set to kick off on Sunday, August 3, 2025.
Nairobi Traffic Commandant, Joseph Chirchir, issued a detailed traffic advisory highlighting road closures and alternative routes to ease movement during the event. In a traffic update released on Thursday, the police announced that several key roads around the Chan match venues would be completely closed or partially restricted.
Mr Chirchir said that Aerodrome Road will be closed from Madaraka roundabout to Bunyala roundabout.
One side of Langata Road (between Madaraka and Lusaka roundabouts) and one side of Mombasa Road (from Lusaka to Bunyala roundabout) will also be inaccessible.
The following alternative routes have been provided to manage traffic flow: motorists on Mombasa Road heading towards the city Central Business District (CBD) should use the Likoni–Enterprise Road at General Motors or the Southern Bypass at Ole Sereni.
Those on Langata Road heading towards the city centre are advised to divert via Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road at the Mbagathi Roundabout.
Those travelling from the CBD to Thika Road, Ruiru, Juja, and Thika are advised to use Limuru or Kiambu Roads.
Public service vehicles carrying fans to Kasarani Stadium should follow Ruaraka–Baba Dogo Road and then Ngomongo Road to the Ngomongo Roundabout.
Motorists on Thika Road, the advisory said, may opt for the Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road or Limuru Road.
The Chan tournament is expected to attract thousands of fans, with Nairobi City playing host to multiple high-profile matches.
